BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP:

The association of physical scientists in medicine is by definition a forum where people can meet and exchange views and information relating to the physical sciences in medicine. Information exchanges occur in a variety of ways including through meetings, by post and through e-mail discussion groups. People contribute to these groups from as far away as Australia. The soon to be established web site for the APSM will offer a means of reaching a wider audience and receiving news and opinion held by fellow professionals.

Keeping up to date with medical physics information is important in environments where practices, recommendations, and guidelines are constantly changing. Sharing experiences with other medical physicists allows us to build our expertise without having to age considerably or wait for unexpected scenarios. This “ collective wisdom” has proved particularly successful in our special interest groups where we discuss issues affecting radiation protection, education and professional development and clinical engineering.

Healthcare can benefit through appropriate application of the physical sciences in medicine. With the continuing evolution of the role of the medical physicist, the APSM allows members to discuss professional issues, develop views as an organisation and represent these views to appropriate organisations and individuals. The APSM is considered as a major voice for medical physics in Ireland. This is reflected by its positions on state boards such as the radiological protection institute of Ireland or participation in the European Federation of Medical Physicists (EFOMP). These positions are open to all members and holders of these positions communicate with and reflect the views of the APSM members.

The APSM regularly engages in discussions with government departments and have been invited and continue to be invited to contribute to draft legislation affecting medical physics at national and EU level.

The APSM has invested considerable effort in developing appropriate standards for a professional medical physicist, is represented on the committee of the Registration scheme for medical physicists. A number of members are also members of trade union vocational groups. There is a high level of cooperation between these groups. However, the APSM allows members to discuss and express professional views outside a union structure.

Members of the APSM are involved in academic and training course developments for medical physicists. Information on these courses is disseminated to members. The web site hopes to have a role providing information about new and upcoming posts and to act as a means for advertisement for these posts.

The APSM has held over ten scientific meetings. These are held annually and include oral and scientific presentations drawn from a number of areas of medical physics and clinical engineering, from radiation diagnostics, radiation therapy, non-ionising radiation therapy, information technology in all fields of clinical engineering and radiation physics, radiation safety, equipment developement and assessment to individual areas of research and many more areas. Access to all this means the relatively small membership fee has brought significant benefits to members. All members in the organisation benefit by contributing ideas, and commitment to see ideas through.
